I. What is a Jumper?

The metal connecting wire between two points is called a jumper.

Q: Why use a jumper?

A: Because the conductors are disconnected at the tension tower, jumpers are used to achieve the electrical connection of the line, thereby enabling the transmission of electricity. The two ends of the jumper do not bear tension and are connected by bolts through equipment clamps and tension clamps, allowing for easy disconnection and reconnection. Generally, a set of tension wires includes equipment clamps.

During line construction, installing the jumper is the final step. The jumper is installed leisurely after the installation of the tension strings on both sides is completed.



II. What is a Jumper String?

The jumper achieves the connection of conductors, but it also needs to solve a problem: the jumper becomes a charged body.

How to ensure the electrical safety distance between the jumper and the tower?

When the tension tower is at 0 degrees, the distance between the jumper and the tower is generally not a big issue, and sufficient safety distance can be ensured by fabricating the jumper with a certain curvature. However, as the line's turning angle increases, the jumper on the outer corner side will approach the tower body, so it is necessary to find a solution to the tight electrical distance issue, as shown in the diagram. If a jumper string is not installed on the outer corner side, the jumper will be very close to the iron tower, and the larger the turning angle, the closer the jumper will be to the tower.



The most direct way to solve this problem, of course, is to increase the length of the crossarm, but this would lead to increased tower materials and moments, making it the least efficient method.

The most effective method is to install a jumper string at the end of the crossarm to restrict the position of the jumper, as shown in the diagram below:
